For the last year I've spent a lot of time preparing material for a new blog, and after many technical delays, the blog is up and running. I was bowled over by the generosity of my fellow makers, and I've a complied a number of articles dealing with issues that many of us in the trade face, not just those of us who are starting out, but those who've been at the lutherie business for years. Here it is: http://www.theluthierblog.com Please, take time to have a read through the articles, every week I hope to add one or two more. If you feel like it, sign up to the newsletter to know when the latest stuff has been posted. If you have any suggestions for articles, topics or interviews, please drop me a line. Likewise if you spot any big mistakes, send me an email to nigel@theluthierblog.com Thanks Nigel http://www.theluthierblog.com http://www.nkforsterguitars.com |

Nigel, thanks for posting the link. I haven't had a chance to give it a thorough look yet but I certainly will. I read the "5 Rules For Making A Guitar That Will Sell" article and enjoyed it a lot. Thank you! |

Good Stuff Nigel. I especially liked the "slow down" advice. I call it the "being in a big hurry to go nowhere" syndrome". The constant little pulse of anxiety that you need to get done and move on to the next project. A lot of us are driven achievers and perfectionists and it's something we have to fight constantly. I think that if most of us take a realistic look inside there is a a bit of a craving to get the project done so we can show it off and become the recipient of the adulation that we expect to follow and that we secretly crave. If that, rather than the actual joy of the process becomes the driving factor we are in trouble as one can never get enough. The same could be said for performing music. |

I remember seeing this youtube video of some guy in an African refugee camp making guitars. The tools and materials were pretty bad by our standards and the quality of finish is definitely not up to what we'd consider perfect, but he made decent guitars. |
